Hebrew Character Test and Keyboard Layout for Logos Hebrew Keyboard

About Sarah Blake LaRose

Sarah Blake LaRose teaches Biblical Hebrew and Greek at Anderson University School of Theology and Christian Ministry in Anderson, Indiana. She is one of three blind academic scholars who received the Jacob Bolotin Award from the National Federation of the Blind in 2016 in recognition of innovative work in the field of access to biblical language texts and tools for people who are blind. In addition to her work as a professor, she provides braille transcription services specializing in ancient languages. Her research interests concern the intersection of disability, poverty, and biblical studies.

This layout description was created to assist students who are blind or visually impaired in learning the layout of the Logos Biblical Hebrew keyboard. Since the manual is in PDF format and, even when converted to a more usable form, relies heavily on diagrams and visual demonstrations, it seemed reasonable to create a resource so that key assignments could be located easily if necessary. If you don’t wish to view the entire table, the following points will be of use.

  • Letters are arranged phonetically as much as possible. The j key is assigned to the letter khet. The f key is assigned to the letter tet. The c key is assigned to the letter tsadi.
  • The point which forms the qamets is mapped to both shift+a and o. This is because it can be used for both an a sound as in the word father and an o sound.
  • To form the reduced vowels, use shift with the letter below the vowel (shift+z, shift+d, shift+l).
  • To form characters such as hireq-yod, type the two letters. They will not display in braille as they do in hard copy. There are no precomposed characters for these combinations.
